Age and Growth Rhythm of Tree Species Natural From Pantanal Matogrossense, MS PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Mattos, Patricia Póvoa de; Seitz, Rudi Arno; Salis, Suzana Maria de.
The information on the influence of environmental factors upon growth rate of trees is very important for the development of forestry management programs. The aim of this work was to determine the age and  radial increments of the trees. Samples were collected, in July 1996, in Nhumirim Farm, Embrapa Pantanal, located in Nhecolândia sub-region, Pantanal, Corumbá - Mato Grosso do Sul. The disks from 19 trees species were collected in areas with Arboreous Savanna, Forested Savana and Semi-deciduous Dry Forest. The  trees were selected by good canopy formation. Traversal section samples of the stem were collected of each tree at 0.3 m height, to determinate age and  increment of the first five years of the trees, and at  1,30m height, to evaluate the growth...

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi associated with the rhizosphere of seedlings and mature trees of Swietenia macrophylla (Magnoliophyta: Meliaceae) in Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico RChHN
Rodríguez-Morelos,Víctor H; Soto-Estrada,Alejandra; Pérez-Moreno,Jesús; Franco-Ramírez,Alicia; Díaz-Rivera,Pablo.
BACKGROUND: Big-leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) is the woody species with the highest economic value in Latin America. Currently, it is subject to intensive exploitation, diminishing its natural populations. Due to this decline, the species is a preferred species for reforestation and establishment of commercial tropical plantations. Mycorrhizal symbiosis is a biotic factor scarcely studied in the ecology of this species. Therefore, the objective of this research was to identify the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) species associated with the rhizosphere of seedlings and mature trees of big-leaf mahogany growing in its natural habitat, a tropical rain forest in Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico. Soil samples from a 20-cm depth were...

Leaf anatomy changes related to physiological adaptations to flooding in Amazonian tree species Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Herrera,Ana; Escala,Marcia; Rengifo,Elizabeth.
In trees of the seasonally flooded forest of the Mapire River in Venezuela, early flooding induces a reversible diminution in leaf conductance and photosynthetic rate. With the aim of finding an anatomical explanation for the observed responses of leaf gas exchange, the characteristics of emerged leaves developed under drainage or after three months of flooding were examined in the tree species Acosmium nitens, Campsiandra laurifolia, Duroia fusifera, Eschweilera tenuifolia, Pouteria orinocoensis and Symmeria paniculata and in leaves developed only under flooding in Inga spuria and Tachigali davidsei. Anatomy was remarkably similar among species and families and consisted of a bi-layered palisade parenchyma, a 5-6-cell-thick spongy parenchyma and large...

Metabolismo respiratório de raízes de espécies arbóreas tropicais submetidas à inundação Rev. Bras. Bot.
ROGGE,G.D.; PIMENTA,J.A.; BIANCHINI,E.; MEDRI,M.E.; COLLI,S.; ALVES,L.M.T..

Seed size influence on germination responses to light and temperature of seven pioneer tree species from the Central Amazon Anais da ABC (AABC)
Aud,Fabiana F.; Ferraz,Isolde D.K..
In Amazon secondary forests are dominated by pioneer species that typically produce large amounts of small and dormant seeds that are able to form a persistent soil seed bank. Seed dormancy in this group of species is overcome by environmental conditions found in open areas, such as high irradiation or alternating temperatures. Nevertheless, a variety of germination responses to environmental factors is known among pioneers; some of them may germinate in diffuse light or in darkness condition at constant temperature. Seed mass can be considered as one of the factors that promotes this variety. Regarding species with very small seeds, it seems that the trigger for germination is light and for larger seeds temperature alternation may be a more important...
